SHINING A LIGHT
Self-initiated design for World Ocean Day
Created to celebrate World Ocean Day, this unique lampshade is made from fused, salvaged plastics in a calming blend of ocean blues. Inspired by a recent commission in Cornwall — and the rising tide of plastic found along its shores — it’s part of a growing collection that explores our deep connection to the sea. By reusing discarded materials and turning them into something beautiful, I hope to shine a light on the importance of protecting our oceans and rethinking waste through creative, sustainable design.
PROJECT GOALS
-
To celebrate World Ocean Day 2025, I set out to design a one-of-a-kind lampshade that not only captures the beauty of the ocean but also raises awareness around marine pollution — particularly the impact of single-use plastics.

-
A core aim was to show how waste can be transformed into something meaningful, while supporting conservation efforts through design.

CREATIVE APPROACH
Inspired by a recent commission in Cornwall, I was struck by the contrast between the stunning coastal scenery and the plastic waste littering its shores. This sparked the idea for a piece in layered, oceanic blues — echoing the colours and movement of the sea.
I used my fused plastic technique to repurpose salvaged materials such as carrier bags and wrappers, carefully curated to create an abstract seascape effect. The result is a calming, textured shade that tells a story of transformation and care for the planet.
Ocean-blue lampshade crafted from reclaimed plastics, raising awareness and supporting ocean conservation this World Ocean Day.
A SIGNATURE TOUCH
Each lampshade I sell is protected in one of my branded, repurposed fabric drawstring bags — a key part of my packaging ethos.
These reusable bags reduce waste and add a thoughtful, personal touch to the customer experience.

CHALLENGES AND HIGHLIGHTS
-
Balancing the subtle colour palette while working with unpredictable waste materials was both a creative challenge and a highlight. I wanted to evoke the softness of the sea while staying true to the raw, imperfect nature of the plastic.
-
The most rewarding part was seeing how powerfully people connected with the story — it sparked conversations about the ocean, plastic pollution, and the possibilities of sustainable design.
THE RESULT
-
The finished piece is a calming, ocean-inspired lampshade made entirely from reclaimed plastics — designed to be both functional and symbolic.

5% of each sale is donated to @WorldOceanDay, helping fund their ongoing efforts to protect our blue planet. It’s the first in a growing collection of ocean-themed pieces and a celebration of the beauty we can create when we give waste new purpose.
